Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Music Teacher/Choir Director to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for music education, experience with directing choirs, and an understanding of Jewish musical traditions. The Music Teacher/Choir Director will be responsible for developing and leading our school choir program, the Golden Ochtaves, which includes students from various grade levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead music classes tailored to middle and high school students, offering opportunities for student-led projects, ensemble performances, and collaborative music-making experiences.
  • Create engaging lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities within the classroom.
  • Assess student progress through regular evaluations, performance assessments, and constructive feedback sessions.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive choir program that aligns with the school’s educational goals and Jewish values.
  • Conduct regular choir rehearsals, ensuring students are engaged, motivated, and improving their musical skills.
  • Select an appropriate repertoire that reflects a range of musical styles, emphasizing Jewish music.
  • Plan and direct choir performances for school events, holidays, and community programs.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages student participation and growth.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members to integrate music into the broader curriculum.
  • Provide individual or small group vocal coaching as needed.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to the choir program, including scheduling, communication with parents, and maintaining music library.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience directing choirs, preferably in a school setting.
  • Strong knowledge of vocal techniques and choral conducting.
  • Familiarity with Jewish liturgical music and traditions.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire and engage students of varying ages and skill levels.
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

Golda Och Academy is a vibrant learning community that focuses on the intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of each child. In the tradition of Solomon Schechter schools, Golda Och Academy grounds a rigorous dual academic curriculum in the culture and tenets of Conservative Judaism and welcomes students from a wide range of synagogue affiliations and Jewish expression.  Our school is divided into two campuses - one for the Lower School (grades Pre-K - 5) and one for the Upper School (grades 6 -12) - located about two miles apart in West Orange. The school serves approximately 500 students from more than 60 communities across New Jersey. As a Jewish Day School, we dismiss at 2:00 on Fridays for the observance of Shabbat and are closed for most major Jewish Holidays.
